In 2014, Nirupam filed a defamation suit against Rai after the former CAG made the allegations in his book and reiterated it in interviews to the media. The Metropolitan Magistrate’s court at Patiala House, accepting Rai’s apology, recorded Nirupam’s statement and disposed of the matter. Nirupam’s lawyer RK Handu told PTI, “Vinod Rai has been acquitted in the case. Since Nirupam has accepted his apology, the matter has been settled after recording his statement.

The former CAG, in an affidavit filed in the court, said that he had inadvertently and wrongly mentioned Nirupam’s name earlier. In his affidavit, he said, “I had inadvertently and wrongly mentioned the name of Sanjay Nirupam as one of the MPs who attended the meetings of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) or on the other side of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) meetings.” Was pressurized to keep the name of then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh out of the CAG report on 2G spectrum allocation.
