Guwahati. A total of 7,96,456 voters will decide the fate of 31 candidates in the by-elections to be held on five assembly seats in Assam on October 30. This information was given in an official release issued on Tuesday. According to the release issued by the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), 4,03,374 are males and 3,93,078 females out of the total voters. At the same time, a total of 3,165 voters are military personnel, while 8,864 voters are above 80 years of age and 4,998 voters are disabled.
Bypolls will be held on October 30 in Gosaingaon, Bhawanipur, Tamulpur, Mariani and Thora assembly constituencies in the state. Counting of votes will take place on November 2. The Election Commission has put on hold the exit polls related to the by-elections and the CEO’s office has asked everyone to follow the guidelines of the Commission. The need to hold by-elections in Gosaingaon and Tamulpur arose due to the demise of the sitting MLAs there. At the same time, the sitting MLAs of the remaining three seats resigned and joined the ruling BJP.

In this year’s assembly elections, Gosaingaon seat was won by UPPL, Tamulpur seat was won by BPF. Congress won Mariani and Thora seats, while AIUDF won Bhawanipur seat. The BJP has 59 MLAs in the 126-member state assembly, while its ally Asom Gana Parishad and United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) have nine and five MLAs, respectively.
At the same time, Congress has 27 MLAs, AIUDF 15, Bodoland People’s Front three and CPI(M) one while there is one Independent MLA. It is noteworthy that Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal vacated his seat after being recently nominated to the Rajya Sabha, but the Election Commission has not yet announced a by-election for his Majuli seat.
