T20 WC: Bangladesh ‘out’ from third consecutive defeat, West Indies won the match on the last ball


New Delhi. Bangladesh suffered a third consecutive defeat in the T20 World Cup-2021. Two-time champion West Indies (WI vs BAN) defeated him by 3 runs on the last ball in the Super-12 stage match in Sharjah on Friday. With this defeat, Bangladeshi team’s hopes of reaching the semi-finals almost ended. Windies team scored 142 runs in 20 overs losing 7 wickets but Bangladesh team could score 139 runs in 20 overs losing 5 wickets. For the Windies team, wicket-keeper batsman Nicholas Pooran scored 40 runs in 22 balls with the help of 4 sixes and 1 four. He was adjudged man of the match.

Bangladesh team needed 22 runs to win in the last 2 overs. Captain Mahmudullah and Liton Das were at the crease. Mahmudullah hit a six on the first ball of Dwayne Bravo’s 19th over but Liton Das (44) was caught at long on by Jason Holder of tall height on the last ball. Andre Russell needed 13 runs to win in the last over but only 9 runs could be scored in the first 5 balls.

Bangladesh needed a four or a six on the last ball to win and captain Mahmudullah could not score any runs. He returned unbeaten on 31 off 24 balls. Liton Das scored the highest 44 runs for the team. He hit 4 fours in his innings of 43 balls. Jason Holder, Andre Russell, Ravi Rampaul, Akil Hossain and Dwayne Bravo took 1-1 wickets for the Windies team.

Bangladesh bowlers, performing disciplined performance, restricted West Indies to 142 runs for 7 wickets. For the third time in a row, the batsmen of the Caribbean team, sent to bat first, again disappointed. Nicholas Pooran, alone in the last over, made 40 runs in 22 balls while fighting the fort. Bangladesh captain Mahmudullah, aware of West Indies’ struggle against spin bowling, opened the bowling from off-spinner Hassan, which put the Caribbean team under pressure.

After bowling a few overs from the fast bowlers, he called the spinner again in the fifth over and it benefited when Hasan took the big wicket of Chris Gayle (4). Bangladesh took two wickets for just 29 runs in the powerplay. In the next over, Hasan sent Shimron Hetmyer (9) to the pavilion. Kieron Pollard (14 not out) and Chase tried to handle the innings. Pollard left the field in the 13th over due to a fitness problem. The reason for his departure is not known but he came in the last over and hit a six off the last ball.

Earlier, Andre Russell was run out without opening the account. Bangladesh gave life to the chase when Hasan dropped his catch at deep midwicket. He also missed the opportunity to stump Pooran. Chase and Pooran took 14 runs in the 15th over. Pooran hit Shakib Al Hasan for two consecutive sixes. All-rounder Jason Holder also added 15 runs in 5 balls.
