Senior Congress leader Rehman Khan claims – Muslims are not a minority in India

Bangalore. Senior Congress leader Rehman Khan on Saturday said that Muslims are not a minority in the country and they should play a role in nation building. Former Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha Khan said, there are about 20 to 22 crore Muslims in the country. According to me they are not a minority. How can there be 22 crore minorities? We have been given this colour. He told reporters here that he has also written a book, Indian Muslims: The Way Forward. Khan asked the community to contribute in nation building. Khan said, we have to contribute to the society. We should give to the society and become good citizens. Instead of telling the government, we should give to the society.

He said that according to Articles 14, 15 and 16 of the Constitution, if any section or community is backward and needs cooperation, then the Constitution empowers the government to take affirmative action. That is why no party is benefitting any community by coming to power. He was responding to questions on political allegations and counter-allegations between Congress and JD(S) leaders over their support for Muslims ahead of the October 30 bypolls to Hangal and Sindgi seats in the state.

Responding to a question, the Congress leader said that minorities are also citizens of the country and the claims of politicians that the community is being used for votes are an insult to them.

He said, do the minorities not have the knowledge of who to vote for and who should not. The former Union Minister said that Congress is a secular party and for 70 years it has stood to save secularism and Muslims support it.
