PM Modi met vaccine manufacturers, focused on these issues including research


New Delhi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday met representatives of seven Indian companies making anti-Covid-19 vaccines and said that they played a big role in achieving the milestone of providing 100 crore doses of vaccines and in India’s success story. On this occasion, the Prime Minister also said that in view of the success of the vaccination campaign, the whole world is looking towards India with hope. At the same time, he called on vaccine manufacturers to work together continuously to meet the challenges of the future.

Representatives of Serum Institute of India, Bharat Biotech, Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, Zydus Cadila, Biological E, Gennova Biopharma and Panacea Biotech were present in this meeting with the Prime Minister. Apart from these, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and Union Minister of State for Health Bharti Pawar also attended the meeting. During this, these representatives said that the Prime Minister’s leadership was a major factor behind giving 100 crore doses of vaccines to the citizens in just nine months.

A statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office said that Modi strongly appreciated the efforts and hard work of vaccine manufacturers to provide 100 crore doses. According to the PMO, the Prime Minister stressed on the need to institutionalize the best experiences gained in the last one and a half years and said that this is also an opportunity to develop the best efforts in line with global norms.

He said, the whole world is looking towards India in terms of the success of the vaccination campaign. Vaccine makers need to continue to work together to meet the challenges of the future. According to the latest data from the Ministry of Health, 101.30 crore doses of vaccines have been given in India so far. After the meeting, Adar Poonawalla of Serum Institute, credited the Prime Minister’s vision for this achievement and said that the meeting with the Prime Minister on taking the vaccine industry forward, continuously increasing capacity and preparing for future pandemics took place.

He said, “Now all over the world, countries are going to invest in the production of vaccines and India needs to be ahead in this. We discussed about how to take this forward together with the government and the industry.

Adar Poonawalla’s father Cyrus Poonawalla said that there is no doubt in his mind that if the Prime Minister had not led the health ministry, India would not have been able to provide one hundred crore doses of vaccines today. He said, “When he came to Pune in November last year, I had assured him that we would make India self-reliant in terms of vaccines and develop the world’s cheapest vaccine. Today he was very happy that we have fulfilled that assurance.

In a video message, Pankaj Patel of Zydus Cadila said that the prime minister was the biggest factor for the country’s scientists developing vaccines. He said, “The Prime Minister has encouraged us from the beginning. He said that you do it, the government is with you. Wherever you face any inconvenience, the government will cooperate with you. That’s why we were able to develop vaccines.

He expressed hope that the new chapter of innovation that has started in India will grow very fast and India will emerge as an innovative nation.

Krishna Illa of Bharat Biotech said that the achievement of delivering 100 crore vaccine doses was not easy but Prime Minister Modi was committed to do it.

He said that the Prime Minister converted all the negatives into opportunities.

“He made it possible,” he said. I think this is an example of what a leader can do for his country.

Bharat Biotech’s Joint Managing Director Suchitra Illa thanked the Prime Minister for the meeting and said in a tweet that the dialogue was thought-provoking and insightful to prepare Indian biopharma companies to lead the way in global innovation and manufacturing.

India had achieved a historic achievement by crossing the one billion dose mark under the vaccination campaign against the pandemic on October 21, for which the country continues to receive congratulations from all over the world.

More than 75 per cent of immunized adults in the country have received at least one dose, while about 31 per cent have received both doses. The first dose of vaccines has been given to all eligible people in nine states and union territories.

The vaccination campaign started on January 16 and in its first phase, health workers were vaccinated. After this, vaccination of frontline personnel started from February 2. The next phase of the vaccination campaign started from March 1, in which all people above 60 years of age and people above 45 years of age suffering from serious diseases were started.

Vaccination of all people above 45 years of age in the country started from April 1 and vaccination of all people above 18 years of age started from May 1.

In the country’s vaccination campaign, three vaccines are being used, Kovishield prepared by Serum Institute of India, Bharat Biotech’s Covaccine and Sputnik V.
