Mangaluru. They were very happy when 1200 kg of fish got trapped in the fishermen’s net of Mangaluru city of Karnataka, but when they came to know that it is a rare and extinct whale shark, then they found this sea. I left back. The fishermen also had to cut their net worth 1.5 lakh rupees for this. However, they are happy that they have saved this particular fish, which are now present in very small numbers. The fishermen said that ten days ago, a group of fishermen boarded a boat called ‘Sagar’ and set out for fishing in the deep waters in the middle of the sea some 50 nautical miles off the coast of the coastal town of Mangaluru. As he spread his net and waited for the fish to catch it, his net began to stretch, indicating that a large fish was stuck in his net.
He told that initially it seemed that the whole family of some fish might have been trapped in the net and they are going to get a huge amount by selling them in the market. But the way the net was being pulled fast, it came to know that only one big fish was trapped in the net. The fishermen tried to drag this fish into the boat. But this fish was so heavy that even the fishing staff in the boat, who usually used to help them in such work, could not do anything. Finally the fishermen were very happy to see this huge fish trapped in the net. The weight of this fish was 1200 kg. They were happy thinking that they would get a huge amount for it. But his happiness did not last long. One of the fishermen identified this fish as ‘Whale Shark’ which is an endangered sea creature.

When the fishermen came to know that they had caught an endangered fish, they were quite surprised. He said that we were very happy to catch such a big fish in our boat. But when we came to know that there were very few such fish left in the sea, we immediately decided to return it to the sea. We knew that if we left this fish in the net, it would die.
The members of the group began to cut the net so that they could put the whale back in the water. It took them time to completely remove the net from the body of this fish. While the net was being cut, the whale fish remained silent. The fishermen sought help from the fishermen on other boats nearby and with the help of a crane, they took the whale to the Arabian Sea to release it again. Four days have passed since this incident. The fishermen told this when they returned back to the beach on Tuesday night. The net worth of fishermen is 1.5 lakh rupees, which they had to cut to save this fish.
Dr Pratibha Rohit, Director, Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute expressed happiness over the incident. This whale shark is an endangered animal. Fishermen rarely catch fish of this species weighing less than 200 kg. But this time they managed to catch a giant fish. I am glad that they identified this fish and released it back into the sea. They said that
The whale shark is the largest known species of fish. It lives for 80 to 130 years and it survives by eating seaweed and small fish and does not pose any danger to humans.
