External Affairs Minister Jaishankar expressed concern over the situation in Afghanistan, said – developments will have very important consequences

New Delhi. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has said that India was not taken into confidence in the various dimensions of the Doha accord between the US and the Taliban last year and the recent developments in Afghanistan will have very important consequences in the region and beyond. The External Affairs Minister said that at the moment, one of the major concerns for India is whether Afghanistan will have an inclusive government and that country’s land should not be used for terrorism against any other country or the rest of the world.

Addressing the annual Leadership Summit of the US-India Strategic Alliance Forum through digital medium, Jaishankar said that India is in no hurry to discuss the recognition of the new arrangement in Kabul. During an interaction session with former US ambassador Frank Bijner, the External Affairs Minister said that the Quad coalition comprising India, Japan, the US and Australia is not against any country and should not be seen as any kind of factionalism and negative initiative. .

He said, ‘I think to some extent the concern of all of us is justified and when I talk about the level of concern then you know there were some commitments from the Taliban in Doha and the US has to know about it. Know more. We were not taken into confidence about its various dimensions. Jaishankar said, ‘Therefore, there is a broad understanding about the agreement reached in Doha. But beyond this are we going to see an inclusive government? Are we going to see respect for the rights of women, children, minorities?’

He said that the most important thing in this would be to see that the land of Afghanistan is not used for terrorism against any other country and other region of the world. I understand that these are our concerns. “What happened in Afghanistan will have very important consequences for all of us and we are very close to the region,” the foreign minister said. He said that its important points are mentioned in the UN Security Council’s August resolution and how these questions will be dealt with, the question still remains. Responding to a question, Jaishankar said India and the US have similar views on a number of issues related to the recent developments in Afghanistan, including concerns about possible use of Afghan land for terrorism.

Jaishankar also said that there are many aspects on which the views of both are not the same. He said any question of recognition of the Taliban regime should be resolved on the basis of fulfilling the commitments made by the group in the Doha Agreement. There will be issues on which we agree more, there will be issues on which we agree less. Our experiences differ from yours (in the US) in some respects. We are victims of cross-border terrorism in that region and this has in many ways shaped our view of some of Afghanistan’s neighbors.

Jaishankar said, “I think we have similar views on many of these issues at the theoretical level. The use of Afghan land for terrorism is felt very strongly by both of us and it was discussed when Prime Minister Narendra Modi met President Joe Biden.

In response to a question about China and Quad, Jaishankar said that this alliance of four countries is not against anyone, we should think positive instead of discussing negative. “There are bilateral options in many ways and that is something we all have to consider and all of us have extensive relations with China,” he said. In many ways, China is a major country today. In such a situation, our problems or our opportunities may not be the same as those of America or Australia, Japan or Indonesia or France, he said.

Jaishankar said that these will vary from country to country and that China’s development has had a fundamental impact on the international system. In such a situation, in the international system, we have to evaluate and respond according to our interests, he said.
