Something similar happened to Benjamin Maldonado when he and his teenage son were on their way back from a football tournament on the California freeway in August 2019, when a truck slowed down in front of them. Maldonado hoisted his turn signal and went to the right. Within seconds, his Ford Explorer pickup collided with a Tesla Model 3 that was traveling around 60 mph on Autopilot.
6-second video and recorded data captured by Tesla show that neither Autopilot – Tesla’s much-anticipated system that can automatically steer, brake and accelerate the car did its job Nor did the driver slow down the vehicle even for a second. There was an accident. According to the police report, 15-year-old Jovani Maldonado, who was sitting in the front passenger seat and not wearing his seat belt, was thrown forward after the accident and died.
The accident happened four miles from Tesla’s main factory
The accident, which happened 4 miles from Tesla’s main car factory, is now the subject of a lawsuit against the company. It is one of a growing number of accidents involving Autopilot that has fueled concerns about the technology’s shortcomings, and may call into question the development of similar systems used by rival carmakers. And as cars take on more tasks previously performed by humans, the development of these systems could have major implications – not only for the drivers of those cars but for other motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.

Tesla founded in 2003
Founded in 2003, Tesla’s Chief Executive, Elon Musk, is taking a bold stand in challenging the auto industry, attracting dedicated fans and customers, and creating a new standard for electric vehicles. But accidents involving Autopilot could threaten Tesla’s permanent and force regulators to take action against the company. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has about two dozen active investigations into autopilot-related accidents.
Ten people died in five years
At least three Tesla drivers have died in crashes since 2016 in which the autopilot was engaged and failed to detect obstacles in the road. In two cases, the system did not apply brakes for tractor-trailers crossing the highways. In the third, it failed to recognize a solid barrier. In June, the Federal Traffic Safety Agency released a list showing that at least 10 people have been killed in eight accidents involving Autopilot since 2016. That list does not include the accident in which Jovanni Maldonado died.
