Bangalore: Bengaluru Archbishop Peter Makado on Monday requested Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai to drop the proposal to introduce the ‘Anti-Conversion Bill’ bill in the House. He feared that this law would become a weapon in the hands of anarchic elements and it would spoil the environment of the state.
He claimed that the Backward Classes and Minorities Welfare Department has asked the administration and police intelligence to conduct a survey of religious people, places of worship and various establishments belonging to the Christian community only. He requested that this alleged order be withdrawn.
The Archbishop said, “The entire Christian community of Karnataka opposes this proposal (anti-conversion) in one voice and questioned the need for such a law when there are already adequate laws and court directions in this regard.”

Referring to Articles 25 and 26 of the Constitution, he said that by bringing such a law, the rights of citizens and especially those belonging to the minority community would be violated. Apart from this, this anti-conversion bill will become a tool for the chaotic elements to take law in their own hands and communal unrest in a peaceful state can spoil the atmosphere. Macado said in a statement, “The entire Christian community should not be portrayed in a bad light over sporadic incidents.”
