Biplab Deb said – officers should not be afraid of contempt of court, police under my control

Agartala. Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb has asked government officials not to worry about contempt of court as the police is under their control. The CM said, ‘In such a situation, sending someone to jail is not easy.’ Addressing the biennial convention of the Tripura Civil Service Officers Association, Deb had said that a section of officers was referring to contempt of court as if the contempt was a tiger, but in reality ‘I am a tiger’.

Controversy has arisen over this comment of Deb. The opposition said that democracy is at stake under his rule. “Nowadays, a section of officials is afraid of contempt of court,” the Chief Minister said at an event organized at Rabindra Bhavan on Saturday. They do not touch any file citing contempt of court saying that trouble will arise. If I do so, I will be sent to jail for contempt of court.

He said, ‘Where is the problem? How many officers have been jailed so far for contempt of court? I am here, I will go to jail before any of you are sent to jail.’ Deb said that sending someone to jail is not easy as it requires police. Deb is also the home minister of the state. He said amidst thunderous applause, ‘And, I control the police. Officials are referring to the situation as if contempt of court is a tiger! I want to assure you all that I am a tiger. Those who run the government have power.

He also mentioned his experience with the former Chief Secretary.
The chief minister had also mentioned his experience with a former chief secretary on the issue. He mocked the chief secretary and said, “One of our chief secretary said that if he acts outside the system, he will be sent to jail for contempt of court… Then I let him go.” The opposition CPI(M) said that the Chief Minister’s statement shows that he does not respect the judiciary.

CPI(M) state secretary Jitendra Choudhary said, “It shows that he does not respect the judiciary, which is one of the important pillars of democracy.” Democracy is at stake under his rule. The Trinamool Congress also attacked Deb and urged the Supreme Court to take cognizance of his comments.

TMC general secretary Abhishek Banerjee tweeted, ‘Biplab Deb is a disgrace to the entire nation! They shamelessly make fun of democracy, make fun of honorable judiciary. Will the Supreme Court take cognizance of his comments?’

Earlier, he had courted controversy by claiming that the Internet existed during the ‘Era of Mahabharata’. Rabindranath Tagore returned his Nobel Prize in protest against the British.
