T20 World Cup: India beat Australia in warm-up match, Rohit’s fifty after Ashwin’s brilliant bowling


New Delhi. The Indian cricket team defeated Australia by 8 wickets in their second warm-up match of the T20 World Cup 2021 in Dubai. In this match played on Wednesday at the ICC Cricket Academy ground in Dubai, Australia scored 152 for 5 in 20 overs, after which India achieved the target by losing 2 wickets in 17.5 overs. Rohit Sharma scored 60 runs while Hardik Pandya (14 *) hit the winning six. Suryakumar Yadav returned unbeaten on 38 off 27 balls.

Chasing the target of 154 runs, KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma gave a good start to the Indian team. Both added 68 runs in 9.1 overs. This partnership was broken by Ashton Agar and caught by KL Rahul (39) at the hands of David Warner. Rahul hit 2 fours and 3 sixes in his 31-ball innings. Then Rohit took the innings forward with Suryakumar Yadav. India’s 100 runs were completed in 12.4 overs. Rohit also hit a six on the very first ball of this over of Maxwell.

On the second ball of the very next over (14th of the innings) of Marcus Stoinis, Rohit hit a four and the personal score reached 51 runs. He completed his fifty in 36 balls, which included 5 fours and 2 sixes. Rohit retired after scoring 60 off 41 balls and gave Hardik a chance for batting practice. Hardik scored 14 not out off 8 balls with the help of 1 six, while Suryakumar hit 5 fours and 1 six in 27 balls.

Earlier, Australia scored 152 for 5, recovering from a poor start with Steve Smith’s half-century. Smith played an innings of 57 runs in 48 balls with the help of 7 fours. He also shared 61 runs for the fourth wicket with Glenn Maxwell (37) and 76 runs for the fifth wicket with Marcus Stoinis (41 *). Stoinis faced 25 balls and hit 4 fours and 1 six. Thanks to the innings of Smith and Stoinis, Australia’s team was able to add 50 runs in the last 4 overs.

For India, off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin took 2 for 8 while Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ravindra Jadeja and Rahul Chahar took 1-1. Australia won the toss and decided to bat first but the team got off to a poor start and lost 3 wickets for 11 runs. Ashwin, who were in poor form in the second over, sent David Warner (1) and Mitchell Marsh (0) to the pavilion on consecutive balls.

After Ashwin lbw Warner, Marsh was caught at first slip by Rohit Sharma, who was playing the role of captain. Captain Aaron Finch (8) hit a four on Bhuvneshwar Kumar but Jadeja got him out lbw. Smith and Maxwell then carried on the innings. Both took the team’s score to 34 for three in the powerplay. Maxwell started with two consecutive fours on Jadeja, while Smith also hit a boundary on the left-arm spinner besides leg-spinner Rahul Chahar.

India’s regular captain Virat Kohli also bowled two overs in the meantime. Australia’s half-century was completed in the 10th over. Chahar bowled Maxwell to end his 61-run partnership with Smith. Stoinis hit four boundaries on Kohli and Varun Chakraborty. Australia’s 100 runs were completed in the 15th over. Smith hit three consecutive fours on Shardul Thakur in the 17th over and then completed his half-century in 41 balls with two runs. Stoinis took the lead in the 19th over, hitting fours and sixes in consecutive balls of Chakraborty. In the last over, Bhuvneshwar got Smith caught by Rohit.
