IPL 2021: Kolkata is almost certain to reach the playoffs by trampling Rajasthan


New Delhi. Kolkata Knight Riders defeated Rajasthan Royals by 86 runs in the IPL-2021 match on Thursday. Kolkata made a strong score of 171 runs for 4 wickets in 20 overs due to the half-century of Shubman Gill. After this the Rajasthan team was all out for 85 runs in 16.1 overs. With this win, Kolkata’s access to the playoffs is almost certain. Now Mumbai Indians will have to beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by a margin of more than 171 runs in the match to be held tomorrow i.e. on 8 October. If they chase the target, then it will be very difficult to stay better than Kolkata’s net run rate.

Chasing a target of 172 runs in Sharjah, Rajasthan had a very poor start and half the team had returned to the pavilion by the score of 33. Rahul Tewatia was the top scorer of the team, who scored 44 runs in 36 balls with the help of 5 fours and 2 sixes. Rajasthan scored only 17 runs for the loss of 4 wickets in the powerplay of 6 overs. Yashasvi Jaiswal (0) was bowled by Shakib on the third ball of the innings. On the first ball of the next over of Shivam Mavi, captain Sanju Samson (1) was caught by Eoin Morgan. Lockie Ferguson gave 2 blows in the fourth over of the innings and got Liam Livingstone (6) caught by Rahul Tripathi while Anuj Rawat was dismissed lbw.

Then in the 8th over of the innings, Shivam Mavi sent Glenn Phillips (8) and Shivam Dubey (18) to the pavilion. Dubey hit 1 six in 20 balls. Chris Morris (0) was caught by Varun Chakravarthy while Jaydev Unadkat (6) was caught by Ferguson at the hands of Shakib. For Kolkata, Shivam Mavi took 4 wickets for 21 runs while Lockie Ferguson took 3 wickets. Varun Chakraborty and Shakib Al Hasan got 1-1 wickets.

Earlier, Shubman Gill scored a brilliant half-century. He scored 56 runs in 44 balls with the help of four fours and two sixes and also added 79 runs for the first wicket with Venkatesh Iyer (38). Chetan Sakariya (1 for 23) and Chris Morris (1 for 28) bowled economical in the final overs to prevent KKR from posting a big total. Royals captain Sanju Samson won the toss and elected to bowl, after which Gill and Venkatesh got the Knight Riders off to a good start.

Gill hit a four in the first over of Jaydev Unadkat while Venkatesh made Chris Morris see the ball for the boundary. Gill hit Chetan Sakariya’s first six of the innings. Gill and Venkatesh did not take much risk in the power play, scoring only 34 runs in the first six overs. Venkatesh then took the front. He hit two sixes on this fast bowler in the 10th over after hitting a four on Unadkat. Gill also took Rahul Tewatia’s ball to the audience. Tewatia, however, bowled Venkatesh in the same over to end his 79-run partnership with Gill.

Nitish Rana (12) hit a four and a six on Glenn Phillips as soon as he came but was caught by Liam Livingstone in the same over. Rahul Tripathi opened the account with a four on Phillips. Gill took the team’s score beyond 100 runs in the 13th over with a four on Mustafizur Rahman, but Tripathi was lucky in the same over when Sanju Samson dropped his catch. Taking advantage of the gift of life, Tripathi hit two consecutive fours on Shivam Dubey.

Gill completed his half-century in 40 balls with a four on Sakariya. He also hit a four on Maurice but was caught by Yashasvi Jaiswal off the same fast bowler. Sakariya then bowled Tripathi (21) as well. Sakariya scored three runs in the 18th over while Mustafizur scored seven runs in the 19th over. Captain Eoin Morgan (13 not out) hit a six on Morris in the last over to take the team’s score past 170 runs. Dinesh Karthik remained unbeaten on 14 runs.
