The first Himalayan Film Festival ends the films Secool and Shady: A Forgotten Land get awards


Leh. Films of Ladakhi filmmakers Stanzin Tankong and Stanzin Gurmet won awards at the first Himalayan Film Festival held in the Union Territory of Ladakh. 3 short films were awarded. Meanwhile, Ladakh’s Lieutenant Governor RK Mathur strongly advocated for organizing the film festival annually to highlight the talent of the Himalayan region. The 5-day film festival concluded on Tuesday night at the Indus Culture Center in Leh.

An official spokesperson said that the Lt Governor of Ladakh attended the ceremony as the chief guest, Apoorva Chandra, Secretary, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India and noted filmmaker-director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra as special guests. Tankong’s acclaimed film “Secool” won the Best Story award, while Gurmet won the Best Editing award for “Shady: A Forgotten Land”. 4 films were screened in the closing ceremony.

The best three short films award went to ‘The Tented Mirror’ (Manipur), ‘Go for Organic’ and ‘Homework and Godliness’, who were awarded a cash prize of Rs 3.5 lakh. In his address during the closing ceremony, Lt Governor Mathur expressed happiness over the success of the festival and said that it should continue as an annual event.

Regarding better training of local film artists, the Lieutenant Governor said that the administration is working towards tying up with the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune for training in Ladakh. The film festival, which ran from September 24 to September 28 in Leh, received 100 entries from Himalayan states and union territories. A total of 26 films were screened and 18 entries recommended by the jury were also screened.
