Mumbai. The Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital in Mumbai, the country’s financial capital, has created a record. Actually, the hospital not only repaired the mitral valves of two patients through Mitraclip procedure but also discharged them after just 48 hours. The Mitraclip procedure of both the patients was performed by Dr. Maulik Parekh and Dr. Nihar Mehta, Consultant Cardiologists at the hospital. Let us tell you that this West India’s first Mitraclip procedure was done at Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital.

Valve leak repaired without open heart surgery
The Mitraclip procedure is a new and revolutionary treatment in which a leaking mitral valve is repaired without open heart surgery. In this, two leaflets of the mitral valve are clipped at the place from where it is leaking. Mitral valve leaks can occur due to many reasons like heart blockage, valve dilation, valve leaflet prolapse. In most of these cases, treatment is possible with Mitraclip. So far its results have also been excellent. Let us tell you that this device is heavily used in western countries. But, it has come in India only in the year 2020. Now it is available in Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital.

Which problems are treated in Mitraclip procedure?
Mitraclip procedure reduces valve regurgitation, improves quality of life, reduces the risk of breathlessness and hospitalization, reduced heart size, and relieves the patient from risky open heart surgery. A few months ago, Sudhir Mehta, 78, was admitted to the ICU of the hospital due to heart failure and chest infection. The investigation revealed a serious leak of his mitral valve. First of all, the doctors controlled his infection. After this, on 23 August 2021, he was given the Mitraclip procedure at Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital. After this, he was discharged within 48 hours after feeling well.

What are the symptoms of mitral valve leak and prolapse
80-year-old Ramesh Radia’s investigation revealed mitral valve prolapse with severe mitral regurgitation after he complained of swollen legs, irregular heartbeat and breathlessness. He was treated with Mitraclip procedure on 24 August 2021. Then even after 48 hours, he was also discharged from the hospital. Dr. Maulik Parekh said after the successful treatment of both the patients that now the elderly and other patients suffering from severe mitral leaks will be able to benefit from the Mitraclip therapy available in Mumbai. At the same time, Dr. Nihar Mehta said that due to leakage of mitral walls, many patients have difficulty in breathing. Due to this they have to be admitted to the hospital again and again. Now they can be treated with this therapy.
