Before launching in India, Tesla urges the central government to reduce import tax

New Delhi. America’s electric car maker Tesla has requested the Indian government to reduce the import tax on electric cars. According to the information, Tesla Inc has written a letter to the Indian ministries demanding reduction in import tax on electric vehicles. Two sources with knowledge of the matter told news agency Reuters that the move would boost demand and generate revenue for the government.

Tesla has said in a letter to ministries and the country’s leading think-tank Niti Aayog that it would be more appropriate to reduce federal taxes on imports of fully assembled electric cars by 40 percent. Tesla will not get a direct competition for electric cars in the country yet. However, Mercedes-Benz and Audi are also planning to launch their own electric models. After America, China is a big market for Tesla.
